About KCFD1

On November 20, 1944, the Klickitat County Board of Commissioners voted to establish Klickitat County Fire Protection District #1—as the name implies, Klickitat County’s first fire district—which would service the community of Trout Lake in the northwest corner of the county. John Schmid, Carlton Allaway, and H.B. Thomas were named as the first-ever KCFD1 fire commissioners.

Over 80 years later, KCFD1 continues to provide emergency fire and medical services to Trout Lake’s 800+ residents. The district is governed by a 5-member board of commissioners. KCFD1 relies entirely on volunteers, including department officer positions of Chief, Assistant Chief, EMS Captain, Treasurer, Secretary, and Training Officer. Volunteers spend countless hours training and responding to calls—both in KCFD1’s district and in adjacent areas as mutual aid. The department often provides rescue and medical services for neighboring Yakima and Skamania Counties when emergencies arise on Mt. Adams or the surrounding national forestlands.

KCFD1 operates out of one station in Trout Lake (2415 Hwy 141), where the department houses several structural fire engines and tenders, a brush truck, and an ambulance.

Note: KCFD1 versus Trout Lake Volunteer Fire Fighter Association

Klickitat County Fire District 1 (KCFD1) is a local government agency established by voters to provide fire protection and emergency services within a defined area. It is funded through taxes and governed by an elected board of commissioners. The district is legally responsible for emergency response, training, equipment, and compliance with state laws to ensure public safety.

The Trout Lake Volunteer Fire Fighter Association (TLVFFA) is a nonprofit organization made up of community members who volunteer their time to support fire and emergency services. The association often focuses on fundraising, volunteer support, and community outreach. While it plays an important role in supporting fire services, it does not have governmental authority or legal responsibility for emergency response.
